Question for y’all, I like the not so popular rifle calibers, I have a few 7-08s but have always been intrigued by the 284 win.
Can you get the full performance of a 284 in a 22” barrel? Anyone have experience with the 284? I have access to a couple hundred 284 brass. Or do I just stick with the 7-08?

What is the "full performance" of the 284? If you are shooting a 7mm-08 in a 22" barrel are you getting its full performance? Either way aren't you handicapping the cartridge, really any cartridge, with a 22" barrel. If the 284 is interesting to you I would go with it.

So what you’re saying is a 22” barrel doesn’t handicap a 284? At that point is it more or less a 7-08?

If a short action, I'd go 7-08. If a long action and able to seat heavy bullets long in an 8 twist, I'd go 284. 22" barrel or maybe a 19" barrel suppressed would not bother me.

More powder will always equal more speed, from 10” to 30”

For same barrel length you’ll always get more speed from the 284 over the 7-08

If you were comparing a 18” 284 to a 22” 7-08 it might be different.

I’ve always wanted a 284, it think it’s a cool cartridge and would be a great fit for a standard bolt face tikka length action.

According to Hornady load data (assuming SAAMI),

The 7-08 out speeds the 284 by 100fps (50g vs 53 of fastest performing powder).

Take that with a mild grain of salt though because it’s common practice to stretch the 284 out to longer action lengths.

I’d say if you plan to shoot all factory SAAMI spec, it’s not worth it to move to 284.

If the plan is to have a longer throat and load longer 284 bullets, you should be able to put closer to 60g of powder in there and beat the 7-08 by 100-200fps. In that case the shorter barrel would result in still a faster bullet travel than a similar 7-08. No handicap.

Even at short action COAL the 284 will have around 150-200 fps advantage over a 7-08.

Not necessarily disagreeing. But posting published data.

I’d like the think the same. And I’m sure in actual practice you can “possibly” beat the data.

Fwiw in 7-08 I’ve only been able to get 150g that fast. Not 160.

I appreciate the comments, I have a tikka 7-08 I could have rechambered to a 284 or a long action M700, either way I could run it. I doubt I'd shoot anything bigger than a 154, mostly 140 AB or PT. I have an Ackley that drives tacks with the 160 AB that works wonders.

I built an ultralight 284 with a 22” barrel last summer. I did my load work with a 168 Berger. RL17 was giving me 2950 fps but only 1 moa accuracy. H4350 was 2820 fps with 1/2 MOA. I am planning further load work with the 162 ELDX this summer. I was very happy with the performance last fall. Mule deer at 607 yards and bull elk at 328 yards. Easy to tune and easy to shoot compared to the magnums I typically work with.

I would guess that the specs on a .284 have lower upper level pressures than a 7-08 because the .284 win was originally chambered in those older lever actions. Given that 6.5-284s shoot 100-200 fps faster than .260 Rems I think it would be safe to assume you would get roughly the same performance difference in the 7mm line.

This is from the book “cartridges of the world” so take it how you want but the 284 should outperform 7-08 in like barrel lengths.

Just put together a 22" 284 on a savage short action. The 284 does have a cool factor to it. Haven't got a chance to really see what it can do yet, gonna focus on bullets in the 139-154gr range.

150 eldx crushing along at 2950 or so would be some sweet medicine. Eldx (in my experience) at those lower velocities do great and the BC is better than class for that weight.
