Looking at trying the 165 grain accubond out of my 308. Muzzle velocity will be near 2700 FPS due to 20” barrel. I’m wondering if I will get reliable expansion on elk near the 500 yard range?
At 500 yards I will have right at 1500 ft lbs and slightly above 2000 fps. Nosler specs out 1800 FPS min for expansion but after reading many reviews, I’m wondering if the accubond is too tough for long range 308 win hunting.
I can’t find their long range version in stock otherwise I’d try it. I’m curious if the 165 nosler BTs would be a better choice? My experience is that 130grain 270 win BTs come apart at 500 yards on elk but penetrate to the off side and result in a dead elk
