Picked up my new rifle the other day and started working up some loads. I have H4831 and H1000 and a bunch of 140 grain Bergers. I've seen where a lot of people were using H1000 with good results. I think it's too slow for my barrel. Haven't seen great groups and it powder fouls pretty bad. I'm looking for any info using H4831. I've found Hornady lists max at 54.7 grains. I called Berger and they told me their loads are pretty mild but gave me a max load of 58 grains. Any help is greatly appreciated. Please don't suggest RL26 as I haven't seen any in about a year. Plus I'm not trying to get the most speed, just somewhere around 3000fps. Thanks in advance.

Replying to follow along. Picking up my new rifle in 6.5 PRC this week and starting on some loads. I've been able to track down Rl-25 so I'm going to start there. Planning to move to the 127 LRX at some point so there's plenty of experimenting to be done.

What barrel length are you working with?

Follow. I have 40 rounds through my 6.5 Prc. I’m using Hornady Precision Hunter and getting well under 1 moa. I figure I’d break in the barrel and save some brass before I start loading. I plan on starting with H4831 also so I’m curious to see what others are getting out of it.

H1000 will not be too “slow” for your 26” barrel and should work well with 140 and heavier.

So why does it powder foul so bad and have excessive smoke. I ran into this a few years ago with a 7 mag and 180 grn Bergers. Gave up on it and went to H4831 and no more problems. The H1000 is all I use in my 300 Win Mag and 338 Edge.

I haven’t a clue what is going on with your particular rifle, but the burn rate of H1000 is about as good as it gets for the 6.5s. The 4831 may work well just have to try and see I guess.

H4831.jpgH4831.jpgHere's 5 shots of 5 different loads. 53, 53.5, 54(flyer that was me), 54.5 and 55 grains of H4831. No pressure so I've loaded some more up going up to 59 grains but will stop when I see pressure. I will shoot these loads at distance to see what they do.

I recently had a custom 6.5 prc built with a #1 22” benchmark barrel. The smith who put it together recommended H4831 for my 140gr AB’s, and said to go with H1000 if I was to go with a heavier bullet.

I’ll attach the ladder I shot at 100 yards. I was using a magnospeed, which makes shooting for groups hopeless with the skinny barrel. I ended up crossing out shot #15, something went wrong there I think to cause that spike (miss measured something?). So settled on 56.6grand used 2975fps in my ballistic app, and has dialed perfectly so far out to 600 yards.

I did try a few loads with H1000, i stopped at 59gr, with an avg of about 2950fps with 140 AB’s. But because of having plenty of H4831 on hand, it will be my go to for this rifle.

I did also try R26, hottest I went was 57gr and was almost hitting 3000fps.

About to load a ladder for my Savage Ultralight using 127 LRXs and 124 Hammer Hunters, starting with H4831SC. It's 1:8, should be in the ballpark. If anyone has suggestions or personal experience with similar loads, I'd love to hear em!
