Made an impulse decision to start loading for .243 after seeing dies and all the components I needed sitting on the shelves at my local take-my-money-store.

I grabbed 90 gr Sierra Gamechangers after hearing some good things about them. Goal was to start shooting the .243 for cheaper practice and to save wear and tear on my 7 Rem Mag. The Gamechanger seemed like a great bullet for practice and for hunting smaller caribou or blacktails.

Cue the facepalm. My Savage 110’s 1-10” twist barrel won’t push these at any speed that will stabilize them. I didn’t think anything of checking stability because this gun has always shot 100gr bullets just fine, but the length of the Gamechanger is the problem. I got clued in when my first 3-round test group didn’t hit paper at 100 yards. The next load up the ladder gave me a keyhole at 25 yards. Went home and ran the numbers through some calculators and I don’t think this bullet is going to work for me at any speed I can achieve.

So, that’s the buildup to my question. Anyone have a bullet recommendation that will work well in a 1-10” .243 Winchester for <200 lbs game, and be cheap enough for target practice?
Also, anyone want to buy some Gamechangers? Have two boxes new and most of one box pulled that are going to collect dust.

Bergers twist rate calculator has been spot on for 2 times I've used it.
If you don't want ti shoot Berger I'd see what it spits out and look for a similar type, weight in a bullet you like.
Is there a reason your opposed to using the bullets it liked in factory ammo?

Bullets in the only factory 100gr ammo it likes aren’t available as components. Winchester Super X Power Points.

I shoot 105 amax from my kids 1-10 to 600 with great success. I shoot at 3-6k ft....lower might be a problem.

Atmospherics are also part of it. Need these to work at sea level in the cold. Alaska problems.

From what I have read, you need a BC not higher than .430 and not longer than 1.090 bullet. I am shooting the sierra in the Tikka with not so good results. I am going to try Nosler BT 90gr and Hornady Interlock 85 gr. They both satisfy these requirements.

Plenty of bullets to try with a 10 twist. I’d look at 90-95gr Berger’s, 90gr Lapua Scenar or 95gr NBT.

95NBT’s are a tough little bullet and would be my first recommendation. My kids call them purple meanies for a reason.

They work great in a 10 twist and we’ve only kept bullets in 2 of the 14 deer, elk and bears my boys have shot.

They look like this when we do catch em.

Most accurate load I've ever worked up for ANY rifle I've owned, was a Tikka T3 in .243 shooting 100 grain Hornady Interlocks (the old style) over H4350 powder. I have multiple 1/2 MOA 5-shot groups taped in my log book from that gun/load combo. My buddy has that rifle now, and several boxes of my hand loads, and he protects those like gold. You won't find a more accurate combination for the money either.

We had trouble finding a bullet that would group well in my brother's older Ruger 77 243. We wanted to shoot the Nosler 95 BT, but the rifle didn't like them. It did like the Hornady 95g SST, so we settled on those. They don't hold together as well as the 95 BT, but they kill stuff just fine. Usually no exit, but plenty of trauma.

Not positive, but I assumed that rifle was a 1:10 as well, so I didn't try any of the newer high BC bullets.

Thanks for posting up.

Working on a 90 GC load myself, for a Rem with 9 twist. Have the velocity at 3200 fps but is a 1.5 inch load as is. You can heat up the 90 gr GC bullets - I've got more room to go in my tests/quest for accuracy. The faster the better from what I hear for slower twists.

Have a couple of diff powder loads and some length variations to try and might have some GC scrap lead & copper...after all the hype, it needs to be sub-inch. The attraction is that it is supposed to have 2000+ fps and 1000+ energy at 500 yards if you throw em at 3200 fps. That's an attractive load when most of the other stuff dies out around 350 yards using those guidelines.

Sierra pro hunter 100s shoot pretty good for me. At 1 inch while my other bullets are at 1.5-2.0 inches at 120 yds.

Sierra 85 gr HPBT. I haven’t found much better in a cup and core in a 1/10 twist. If striving for varmints, try the 87 gr VMAX.

True, great cheap tough little bullet but has the
BC of a dixie cup.

80 grain Barnes TTSXs or Hornady GMXs are both super solid and have been easy to find accurate loads for in my experience.

That's what I need to get out of the marginal stability regime. Going to order up some of these 85 GameKings and give them a try. Thanks for all the suggestion folks.
