I'm intrigued by this CZ Trail 600 .223 Rem 16.2" bbl w/ telescoping stock.

Especially sicne I'm in CA, and there are some places which rather stupid, out in the middle of an NF, will have signs up stating firearms prohibited. But, they mean up at the top of this mountain where there are antennas and on-site staff housing for some people maintaining them. BUT.. the whole damn mountain is very in the middle of the firearm-zone on this NF's map.

So, sicne I'm interested in hunting, with rifle, significantly further down that mountain... was thinking this CZ 600 would be great to shrink it down, stuf it into the backpack. Maybe even carry a bow with me too on the hike-in, just so no whiny liberal could cause me any grief, cause then I'd present as just a bow hunter, which I also sometimes do.

But before plopping down the money for one, wanted to hear the thoughts and impressions of other users who own them and use them.

Would appreciate any info or things you've noted about the rifle that come to mind.

Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Including link to the rifle on a local retailers website so you can verify which rifle I'm asking about.

I have one in 7.62x39. For what it is, it’s reasonably accurate. The cartridge and ammo I feed it are the limiting factor. The trigger is decent. I hate the bolt/magazines they’re super rough. The stock is not super comfortable or steady.

Watched a guy try to get my LGS to buy his on friday. His was in 7.62x39. He was bragging that it was "accurate enough for hogs at 100 yards!". He was the only person in the shop impressed with his rifle.
I would like to try one out with some match .223 ammo to see how it does because I REALLY like the idea of it.

Hrmm.. darn it.. thanks for the feedback about the stock.

I'd seen a vid where the reviewer stated the stock had some small amount of slop/freeplay to it, and that had concerned me. (Part of why I posted the question, to see if that was just an isolated incident).

Well damn, alright, have to give it a pass then.

Damn.. that shrinkable form-factor really is appealing. Seems a shame they didn't wake-up and smell the coffee re: the slop in that extending stock then. Bummer.

Are there other models with telescoping stocks that shrink up to a small package like this, from other manufacturers?

The Other part of my thinking was this other location, where it starts off with a HORRIBLE climb from 6400 up to 8900 straight-up, no-trail, thru the buck-thorn and blow-down, so even though it's .223 Rem... the shots wouldn't be long distance in that alpine environment at the intended ambush spot. And being able to just say EFF-it and stuff it into the pack would be great for most of the climb up.

Guess back to my original plan of getting another Howa Ultralite then.

Thanks guys.

For those who have handled them, is there really any more slop than an AR-15? Just wondering if a person could get their head around it being a 2-2.5 MOA gun, and embracing a certain niche for it, if it isn’t a perfectly acceptable rifle.

The one I handled had significantly more slop than a 6 position AR15 stock. At that point I was out.
And for me personally, I couldn’t justify $1kish for a 2.5MOA gun with that much play in the stock.
It has a lot of things that I like, but the stocked killed it for me. IMO.

My best accuracy came with Berger Factory 73 grain. 1.5-1.75 10 shot groups. I'm just not ultra confident in that round on game.

I think someone willing to chase powder/primer/bullet combos might find better accuracy, but I'm not that willing. I've tried probably 10 different factory offerings, and my handloaded 77 TMK's with Varget and CFE BLK

I have decided to remount the scope though and give it another try. It was mounted too high, and the trail riser ain't much.

I should have time to shoot it this week and post an update.

For a UL rifle build on a budget check out the Rossi LWC with folding stock in .223
single shot
16" threaded barrel.
~5# with red dot installed
31 inches overall length
looks like ~24" folded
MSRP of $339.

I had one for a while. It shot okay, but I couldn’t get myself to trust the stock. Loved the idea. No issues with it actually, but sent it down the road for a fixed/ regular stock.

Thank You for your efforts in this regard Man! Definitely curious to hear about your results!

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "Trust the Stock"?

Do we mean like... failure to lock-in upon extending it?

Or.... do you mean the play in the stock potentially contributing to accuracy problems when executing a trigger-pulll?.... Or.....?

Disregard my earlier review on accuracy.

I mounted an ARCA rail to the forend using the M Lok. I don't remember exactly when I mounted it, but I'm gonna have to reevaluate.

Yesterday at the range I had taken some 75gr Hornady Black. It was all over the place.

Looking over the rifle again, and how the hell I didn't notice before I don't know, but one of the screws for the M Lok was touching the barrel.

I pulled the screw, and the next three shots fell under an inch.

I'll get it back to the range later today.

Also not who you asked, but my stock has been 100% reliable at every position. Just sloppy

Gonna have to try some more loads.

AAC 75gr Black Sabre bottom right

Still nothing great. Disappointed in the Hornady. The AAC had a 1-1/4" group going, then 9 and 10 opened it up.

So Question... would everybody say these types of grouping sizes could be considered "common" when ya drop barrel length down to 16" like this model?

My thought was, I want another .223 Rem gun so that both myself and my son could have one at same time on an outing to go coyote calling, and then it would also have that benefit of the packability for when I want to consider trying to use it in rough alpine terrain.

And I figured it'd be a great gun to bring with before the season when you're doing your scouting, so ya maybe bring it along to try some sets calling for yotes since ya happen to already be out there looking for where the deer are passing thru.
The other gentleman that mentioned that Rossi LWC, I'm diggin on those too, great caliber options, but I just don't wanna commit to a single-shot action style. At least not yet anyway.

Kinda thinking I might just go with a Howa Mini-Action, since I was impressed with the Ultralite.

Pretty similar to the groups I got with mine with about 4 different types of quality ammo.
Stock moved around too much for my taste for precision work. Not really what it was designed for anyway. I sent it down the road.
