Man, here's the thing as far as I see it: Dude was an obvious troll. Trolls troll because it gets them attention. This guy was getting EXACTLY the response that he wanted (I'll admit, I fell for it too at first before it became OBVIOUS what he was trying to do). I think deleting it was a good call as it was the only thing that would actually have any impact on the dude. If I want to watch fake drama like that I can watch a reality TV show.
