I was thinking, "good thing elk and venison is more of a brown." I see wild game as leaner than beef, but maybe I should have clarified? I'll lean towards staying away from the moo-cow in the meantime. Any other hunters been in my situation? How did you interpret that?

Deer and elk are both lower in fat and cholesterol than beef and chicken. And higher in protein. My cardiologist says venison I can eat as much as I want.

Most Dr.'s say cut out red meat because people are eating fatty red meat. If people did a top sirloin once a week probably wouldn't be much of an issue. Burgers, tacos, fatty steak cuts all can load ones circulatory system with plaque in short order.

Studies show individuals who eat red meat have a higher incidence of disease. However, when you account that the vast majority of people eat red meat and the same majority of people eat shit food it doesn't mean much. Studies that account for factors like eating junk food and exercise show that people would eat red meat are actually heathier than vegans. Your doc has some old info. The real problem behind chronic disease is inflammatory foods like processed sugars.. if you can grow it or kill it your usually OK.

From the research I have done, and acknowledging that I'm a chef not a doctor, it seems that it's the hormones and antibiotics used in the production of red meat that are the problem. Eskimos in the past eat virtually nothing but meat and blubber was a treat, yet they didn't really develop the Diseases of Civilization until they became, er, civilized.

This is true that the antibiotics and hormones make the meat less healthy, they show about a 3ish percent increase in risk. I think it's about a 12 percent chance to a 15 percent chance by eating processed meat. It's the sugary foods and drinks that's getting us, like you said.. humans ate meat, fruits, and veggies for thousands of years without chronic disease.

And they had the shortest lifespans in the history of our species.
I'm in total agreement that processed foods and processed meats in particular are simply not the healthiest choice. Yes...I eat them, but I try to avoid doing it to excess. It's not just about coronary artery disease. Red meat has definitely been linked to colo-rectal cancers, stomach cancers and GI diseases.

All things in moderation. Keep the red meat to a few meals each week. Mix it up with poultry, fish and other proteins. Stay off the bacon, bologna, hotdogs, sausage, etc. Stay completely away from excess fatty meats, or keep it to a rare meal.

Not to criticize your doctor but if you are having a medical issue that leads him to that recommendation, it is probably worth going to a specialist or a nutritionist.

As touched on above there is a view making its way into the mainstream that dietary lipids are less detrimental to overall health than other types of foods. It sounds like your doc may be defaulting to more traditional dietary advice that suggested reducing red meat consumption as a way to lower saturated fat intake.

Truth is, most general practitioners have relatively limited nutritional education and not all of them focus on integrating nutrition into their practice. I suspect almost none of them have read studies comparing the nutritional profile of game meat vs. traditional farm raised meat. If you have some metabolic markers that suggest you need to make a change then it is worth diving deeper and getting some more informed advice.

It’s not the red meat or the fats in red meat that’s the problem it’s the sugar in your diet. Excess sugar in your system causes inflammation and insulin resistance. The inflammation causes hardening of the arteries and the fats stick to the roughened and hardened walls of the artery. Cut out all the empty sugar and you will be much healthier. If you never drink another soda you would be much better off. Bread and rice and you might as well sit down in front of the sugar bowl and start shoveling. Beans are just as bad ! 127 gr of carbs in a cup of baby lima beans !

If you eat 'earth foods' as much as possible you will be much better off. Just eat foods unaltered by man, organic/natural foods. Your body and mind will be a lot better off/function better. Organic meats/chicken, wild caught fish, good quality eggs, fruits and veggies, raw/unfiltered honey, Make sure your gut health (probiotic level) and omega 3 intake is where it should be. I think that black beans are good for you.
Soda, fast foods/processed foods should be avoided at all costs....read the ingredient label and ditch anything with non natural ingredients!

It is initially some work and extra money but clean eating has a huge impact on quality of life. Sleep, energy all of it is better. You have a meal with bread you made, vegetables from your garden, and elk or fish you harvested, feels and tastes great.

Portion control comes naturally with non-processed food.

I interpret that as.....I should eat more prime rib and ribeye steaks. Like when they said bacon causes cancer back in the 80's........been trying to prove them wrong every day since. So far so good. I eat a LOT of red meat. And quite frankly, I could care less what else is on my plate as long as I'm eating prime rib or ribeyes. I could die tomorrow, but it's been a tasty ride.

They also said that smoking causes cancer. My dad smoked a pipe heavily for 60+ years and never got cancer. Lived to almost 90. And he ate a whole gob of red meat in his lifetime as well.

Just want to put out there that virtually all meat is antibiotic free and no meat is hormone free. Even if an animal is treated with antibiotics they do not stay in their system. The body metabolizes and excretes it in predictable time frames. That is why any animal given an antibiotic cannot be slaughtered for a certain time. The FDA does a lot of testing of carcasses in slaughter plants to make sure people aren't cheating and the meat is safe. They can detect down to one part per billion.

No meat is hormone free as every living creature has hormones circulating in it's system. Hormones are such big molecules that they can't be absorbed whole in our guys, they have to be digested down into their parts first. Also remember that many veggies have way more hormones meat. A potato has over 100X more estrogen than beef. A serving of soy milk has 5,921X more estrogen then beef. An adult female will produce 240,000X more estrogen in one day than what is found in a serving of beef.

If you pull up the net and start reading this is a very complicated subject and its constantly evolving.

Id call my doc back and specifically ask him about venison. Ive known several people with heart problems. Doc told them to lay off red meat. They could eat all the venison they wanted.

There are some vaild points above.

Just saw a new study a couple of weeks ago. It was about highly processed foods Vs. non processed foods. They fed the test group food with the same amount of protein, fat, carbs. etc. for 2 weeks each. On average the group ate 500 more calories a day on the highly processed food. And they gained 2 pounds in 2 weeks.

One of the theory's is your body absorbs the highly processed food a lot faster. Therefore you eat more before you fill full.
