This is the slow season for posts on Alaska moose hunting, and I thought I would throw out this question.

Does anyone pick mushrooms while out moose hunting?

If you do, please include pictures, as I am having a hard time finding anything on the net.

I'll be in central Alaska if that makes a difference.

I have seen tons of (I think) chanterelles but when I hunt in the interior the frosts have turned them all. There are lots of other mushrooms but not being able to identify them other than the obvious chanterelles I leave them alone

Hedgehogs are an easily identifiable mushroom in alaska. They have spikes underneath and can be very plentiful in some areas. They are very tasty! A3C94A99-0B66-44A3-996D-748E59385B8B.jpeg

Here’s a pic I found of the underside showing the gills which are spikes. Making it easy to identify as safe to eat:

Mostly found in SE alaska but I’ve seen them in SC Ak too.

I tried to grab a few boletes one year, when I sliced them later they were full of worms.

I was in western Alaska last fall during moose season (not hunting, sadly). There were lots of boletes on the tundra. We picked and ate a fair number, and they were pretty good!
