Guys,

If you were going to build a deer/antelope rifle for a max of 300-350 yards setup with a non dialing non ballistic reticle scope…….what would you buy?

Do you hand load? If yes, 6.5 X 55 Swede or 7X 57 Mauser. Cool points matter!

If factory ammo is required, 260 Remington, 6.5 creed, 7MM-08, 25-06, or .270 Rem (the gold standard for what you describe).

257 roy with 100gr pills. A bit of bloodshot to be expected, but don't expect to miss. There's no flatter shooter for your mission. I killed my roosie elk at 400 using that same combo and it bang flopped in it's tracks.

I have one of my 708s setup for out to 300 while keeping the crosshairs on the animal with a 200 yard zero.

Any. Get your send a BDC reticle (Vortex term?) and no dialing required. Just know what each hash mark represents.

I shoot a 6.5 Creedmoor and a .270 Winchester with reticles like this. I have shot my 6.5 out to 420 yards just on the hashmark. I can shoot over 517 at the bottom post.

Doesn’t take much to figure out the range of each has mark. As little as 6 rounds and at least a 200 yard range.

What’s your process for this?

Hornady 308 Outfitter 165 gr w/ 300 yd zero: ~6" high at 150, ~6" low at 350.

Hornady 7mm Outfitter 150 gr w/ 300 yd zero: ~4.5" high at 150, 4.5" low at 350.

Sierra 165 gr Gamekings were ~5" high at 150 and 5" low at 350.

Picking a chambering you're comfortable shooting and learning your ballistic arc will be more effective for you than chasing an extremely flat shooting cartridge.

.257 Wby...flat shooting, commonly setup with 300 yard zero, more than adequate for deer and antelope.

Weatherby releasing Mark V Hunter (”entry level” line). The .257 Wby is 26” barrel. If you wanted shorter barrel option, their .243 is 22” barrel.

Tikka also offers .243 and 6.5 PRC in the T3X Lite Stainless.

I shoot a G2 reticle like this on other rifles. I’m interest in setting up a basic rifle for non long range hunting. Basically hold on fur and let it rip.
