Living in New Zealand there is no hunting season for the most part. You can hunt deer all year round with very little restrictions. Deer are introduced animals and considered a pest by the govt. that need to be controlled.
Because of this, kiwi hunters shoot far more animals than the average hunter ever will and have developed different ways of effective hunting. One of the secrets they use is to to ditch the American meat saver lung shot and use the Hilar Shot instead. It drops animals so fast you may miss it after the recoil if you aren't on the scope fast enough.
The Hilar shot is about center chest on the front line of the front leg, not shooting the crease behind the leg as many do. A shot here strikes a major center for nerves and arteries. It also disables the shoulder anchoring the animal to the spot.
In NZ the bush is very thick and you don't want animals running. Even one taking off 50 or so yards can be very hard to find. If you are shooting mountain dwellers like Tahr, running means it can fall and damage horns or get bluffed and recovery will be impossible. The Hilar Shot drops animals quickly.
If you are using smaller calibres, the Hilar shot will help them punch above their weight. Give it a go next time you are out.
