Which Weatherby Caliber

6.5-300 or 270 weatherby magnum? Ideas? Opinions? Mainly mule deer gun with occasional elk...

Do you wanna be part of the 6.5 crowd, or the nostalgic crowd? Will you hand load? Great bullet choices for both, with a few more options for 6.5. The 6.5 will shoot a little flatter. Bullet weight options for either is darn near the same. Probably not a critter anywhere that will tell the difference when they get shot.

I personally would go the 257 Weatherby route. Next choice would be the 270 wby.

I agree they wont know...just want to make the right choice...always have wanted a weatherby caliber...just having a hard time choosing. I dont currently hand load (im doing my first bunch right now with my 279 win)

I have a rem 700 action with a 26” PacNor barrel. I would also suggest on any Weatherby headstamp cartridge to run a 26” barrel minimum

6.5 RPM over both.

6.5x300 could fairly be described as “stupid overbore” and the 270 is stuck with 270 bullet options. I’d still pick the 270 over the 6.5x300 though.

Personal preference. After taking a couple handfuls of elk with the 257 and seeing the performance I see no need to go bigger and burn more powder. I think combined all the elk that have been taken with the 257 they total 1.5 steps after bullet impact. That 1.5 steps was a cow that took a step and spun as she fell over. There’s never been any tracking. I’ve gotten fortunate to watch all of them not move from where they were. I picked the 257 as a buddy told me it was no where near an efficient elk cartridge. He no longer argues that point. Shoot a 110 accubond going 3400fps and it’s game over for any elk if you do you part with little meat damage.

The 270 Wby is hard to beat with a 140 grain Accubond or even a 150 partition. Many animals have fallen to my 270 with 140's in the 3200-3300 fps range.

I'm sure the 6.5 is good too and either will do what you're looking for. Kind of a coin flip.

Well, when you get into the Weatherby you are not going into it for efficiency...I’d go with the 6.5-300 and go big. Lots of great bullets and I do believe they have a decent twist to shoot the heavier 6.5s.

OP...are you getting a Weatherby rifle or another make in Weatherby cartridge?

If Weatherby rifle, the 6.5-300 is the 9 lug bolt/receiver; the 6.5 RPM is the lighter 6 lug bolt/receiver.

Makes a difference in weight (if you care about that).

The RPM sits approx halfway between 6.5 PRC and 6.5-300 in performance.

The Vanguard Backcountry doesn't offer the 270 Wby, 6.5-300 Wby nor 6.5 Wby RPM (at least on their website).

EDIT: You can get the 6.5-300 on the Vanguard High Country though...

I have the 6.5-300 and 257 bee. Both get shot buddy has all three he only shoots the 6.5-300. White tails Miley, elk and antelope. I’ve been impressed with the 6.5-300. On rokslide you have to remember the only rifle you need is a tikka in 30-06 or a 6.5 man bun for optics you have two choices. Nightforce or swfa. I will say I like my swfa. My point go with what ever one makes you light up more to say you own.

The .257 caliber is the new cool thing. The 131 Blackjack Ace bullet is a key reason. Also the 25 SST wildcat cartridge and the whole PRC shooting popularity.

On a whim I bought a Mark V Weathermark LT 6.5 RPM and I love the thing. Made in Wyoming, cerkoted and a trigger tech trigger. The factory load with the 127 LRX shot extremely well. .5" at 1 00, .75 at 200 and 1.1" at 300 yards. My wife killed her mule deer with it this year. I switched to the 140 accubonds and killed a bull elk 1st rifle season. It is just another 6.5 but it performs well. I feel its more of a realistic cartridge than the fire breathing 6.5 300 but nothing wrong with a dragon!
I know I know her buck is almost as big as my bull
