There is North Carolina and there is South Carolina. There is no Carolina. If you're surf fishing this time of year NC is probably the better bet.

Started in Cherry Grove SC. Headed to Emerald Isle, NC. Will end the trip in the Outer Banks, Kitty Hawk.

Biggest difference in the Carolinas is the bbq sauce. SC monkeys with mustard, although I do like it.

There's a really good flounder fishery in May in Cherry Grove but you'd need a boat to access it. Outer Banks definitely better surf fishing but all nice destinations. Mustard q sauce is actually just a low country SC style. The "South of the Border" region is home to vinegar based sauce closer to the NC style. All can be delicious.

Yea we typically have better luck in Cherry Grove. We spend a lot of time down here through the year. I only get out to the outer banks a few times a year for surf fishing. I much prefer the western side of the state, the coast is an interesting place. Lexington at the BBQ center probably has the best pulled pork, and barbecue slaw that I frequent. There is a barbecue joint in Eastman, Georgia that'll cook up Boston Butts, and sell some homemade sauce. Stop in, and get ya some if your ever in Eastman. It's a small place, you'll find it.

I can give you some of my favorites if you travel at all through SC beyond just getting to Cherry Grove from the north.

Well, my favorite hidden gem right now is Country Cousins in Olanta, SC. It might only add 30 minutes to your trip from Cherry Grove to Charlotte. Their family recipe has been around in that area longer than I've been alive and the liver hash over rice is the big bonus. Probably only open Thur to Sat...I'd call before going. I'll eat there many Saturday's during deer or turkey season. My office in Charleston is less than a mile from some of the recent bbq rock stars that are being deified by national food writers. Google Rodney Scott or John Lewis. They have nothing on Country Cousins.

You guys are killin' me. I just spent a weekend in Wilmington and didn't even get the chance to smell East Carolina BBQ let alone find a hidden gem along the drive.

I would believe JulianT when he speaks - about the fishing and the food.
