What is the reason behind wanting to ban bear hunting in California? I just don’t see a real legitimate reason behind wanting this.

Bears are far from underpopulated
CA makes a lot of revenue in tag sales every single year.

They don't care about the tag sales as they can't spend it on socialist crap.

This is why I am so blown away that ANY hunter could support left wing politics in the name of public lands. Some good your public lands are if you can't even hunt on them. The left is anti hunting and trapping and we're gonna see some really bad policies that directly affect us over the next 2-4 years...if not longer
hunting ban isnt left wing.. one side clearly favors science.

i dont hunt bears here in CA, but i do not agree with a ban on the hunts. it's the one activity that keeps the bears wary of humans. i see them all the time, and they are always running away from me full speed. its because people are shooting at them. i like that.

i like the post above that states to let the SCIENCE dictate..and if they did, i believe they would increase bear hunting in CA. there are a shit-ton of them.

If anyone has good links of places to send feedback for this feel free to post up. I'm going to tell whoever will listen even though I don't live in CA.

Maybe so, but they will cry about the lost revenue and will try to make up for it from somewhere. Where exactly? Who knows, but I do know WE will end up paying for it.

BTW, our state game agency is about as reflective of the rest of the state as it gets when compared to other state game agencies. If its got California in front of it's name it's a pretty safe bet it's horseshit.

Anyone have luck actually getting their senator on the phone? I’m sure an email would just get opened and ignored by my senators staffers, yet his district probably produces more bears every year than any other senators district.

Even better! Thanks for sharing. I was forced to register for my personal comment, but hopefully your experience holds true for everyone else.

They signaled their intent when they changed their name.

I’m on board with you, but politics aside. I cannot see one legitimate reason why this move would be in CA best interest.
There is no legitimate reason. It's all emotion which is why I believe we have a good chance to win this if we get our voices heard.

Good Luck, sadly, this is happening all across the country. I'm really starting to wonder why I'm associated with certain hunting groups as it makes no difference when stuff is on the ballot box. They have no real stopping power if any. Just "Feel Good Clubs"

If you think this is going to stop in CA you're wearing blinders. Also, where do you think all those people leaving CA on the mass exodus are going? And when they arrive in ID, CO, MT, WY, etc they bring their baggage with them. We are on borrowed time. They could introduce a ban on bowhunting tomorrow in CA or CO and I guarantee it would pass.

Non-resident comment sent, didn´t have to register. Hoping for the best for CA. If this passes there, I have little doubt a similar attempt will be made in Oregon.

¨This proposal has no basis in the science of game management whatsoever. The black bear population of this state has doubled in the last four decades. Hunters have failed to meet the annual quota on black bears every year since its establishment. Black bear tag sales generate over one million dollars in revenue annually, all of which helps support California´s Dept. of Fish and Wildlife.

Hunters are without a doubt the largest source of funding for conservation in this country. Limiting hunter opportunity will inevitably lead to a reduction in hunter participation, and a subsequent loss of funding desperately needed to conserve habitat for our precious wildlife resources. This is a lose-lose proposition for both hunters and black bears in California.

It is also noteworthy that the hunting of black bears is not purely undertaken for ¨sport.¨ Black bear meat is a staple in many hunting households.

The language of this legislation implies that black bears face legitimate threats to their continued existence as a species. Not only is the black bear not considered threatened by the IUCN, California has the largest population of Ursus americanus in the contiguous United States.

The population of black bears in California in 1982 was estimated at around 15,000. Today the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife conservatively estimates their numbers at 30,000 to 40,000. This impressive population growth occurred despite liberal hunting seasons. This is hard proof that legal hunting in accordance with recommendations made by professional biologists poses no threat to the black bear. There is no suitable chunk of habitat in the state of California, from the Sierra Nevada to the Trinity Alps, capable of supporting a healthy bear population that lacks one.

How are voters supposed to trust that our representatives are making policy decisions rooted in sound science given proposals like this one, which flagrantly ignore hard data collected by our professional biologists?¨

As a NR, I don’t know how much I can help. I sent an email to Sportsmen’s Alliance, with the link provided. I’m not a member(or fan) of BHA, but I’ll email them as well.
Thanks for mentioning The Sportsman Alliance. I had been meaning to join. Their sight at least has information up about the proposed ban so I joined and gave them quite a bit.

In their defense, the department didn’t change their name. Lawmakers did

Just goes to show the lack of control and impact the DFW really has. Just like everything in California "You can do it your own way, if it's done just how I say". Gotta give credit to Metallica for that one.
