I built my elk rifle on a smaller budget, but very little I'd change with a larger one. Add on whenever can you like and you're still well under your budget. Could maybe even upgrade to a Tenmile 3-18.

At that price point I’d wait until May when the new Sako 90 Quests hit the stores.

6.5CM
20” barrel
Best stock I’ve ever used (until possibly the Rokstock we shall see).
Comes threaded for a can

Throw a SWFA 3-9 or potentially a Maven RS1.2 (passed the field eval here and is on a rifle of mine that gets shot and hunted with weekly). Long term durability is still in question on the Maven but it’s looking really good so far.

There are so many rifles I would build just because they are cool, and I’d guess you could hunt Elk with one or two of them.

It’d be awesome to have a custom rig built off a Mk V, a M70, a classic Sako… but those are hard to come by.

The older I get, the more “over” modern stuff I am. I was looking at pre-64 M70 actions and Maple stock blanks the other day…

lol
My young nephew inherited a maple stocked pre-64 rifle from one of his grandparents, and every time he takes it to the public range it’s like gun porn to all the old retired guys and they all want to know why a kid his age has one. 🙂

A Rem 700, aftermarket trigger, pounder stock, stainless #3 barrel in 300 PRC, a pair of Leupold fixed power scopes (4x & 6x) in steel rings with a steel one piece base. I used to think industrial hard chrome was the ultimate weatherproof finish, and it is good, but just letting a blued rifle be itself isn't the end of the world - once the original finish is crap, then do something.

For an off the shelf rifle the Christensen Mesa in 300 PRC is awfully nice, although the stock isn’t super light weight. I really like the thin grip.

I still like the small fixed scopes at any price - both are sighted in, but if it’s more open the 6x stays on, and in thicker areas the 4x is ideal. I haven’t swapped scopes with a lot of aluminum rings/bases, but it seems reasonable that a steel base and steel rings return much closer to zero, so it seems worth the weight penalty.

Even 5 miles in, a quick trip to the trailhead and back to swap out scopes is only 4 hours if you’re moving light and quick. In the past, a second rifle was kept at the trailhead, but nowadays everyone thinks it’s cool to be a thug and take things that aren’t theirs, so a second scope is the next best thing. The lock picking lawyer sells everything a thug needs to open your truck door.

My current go to is a stainless Model 70 in 300 win mag with a Steiner Predator 4, 4-16 with illuminated retical.

I had the trigger tuned to 3 pounds. The original bedding was imperfect, so I bought some marine Tex and created pillars plus bedded with it. No issues. It’s 3/4 MOA consistently with 180 gr TSX.

Have everything except stock, rings, and barrel but here's my build:
-Tikka 300wsm action: $770 (bought in 2021)
-PBB 6.5 prc lite hybrid 20in threaded and fluted: $540
-Maven RS1.2 3-15: $1200
-UM rings and level: $180
-Rokstok bare carbon: $545
-harvester evo and stamp: $800
-HCA 2nd gen tikka mag and LA bolt stop: $125

Planning to load up either 147 eldm or 156 berger. Also forgot brass/bullets/dies for that as well. So add tax and shipping to that, probably around $4000. Want to puke a little after adding all that up.

I think I would go for a Ruger Gen II in 7mm 08 $559 at Omaha outdoors, Witt macine dirty 30 $250-300 plus stamp $200. A Trijicon credo 3x9x49 $554. Roughly $1550 w/fees. Use the rest for a good hunting trip somewhere.
