So I sell trucks for Dave Smith Motors in North Idaho. I get so many people asking about longevity and reliability of trucks especially when looking for used rigs. I have always owned a Chevy so I have my own opinions about the 5.7, 5.3 and 6.0. I never owned a diesel. What I would like is some real info about your rig, the miles you put on it, issues, likes and dislikes. I would prefer facts over opinion but I really do just want to hear what people have to say. Thanks

1997 Ford F-250 7.3L Powerstroke diesel, 5 speed manual extended cab. 170k miles. Solid as a rock. Gonna sell her soon, she’s been in the family since new, just too big.

The only problem with older diesels is when it comes time to fix something, it’s spendy.

So what issues did you have? Tranny just fry?
Yeah, complete rebuild for me at 130k. My grandfather had to do his at 100k. My symptoms were the same as many who had issues with the torque converter. I called a couple shops and one knew what was up before I even finished telling him what was going on.

Edit: I will say one shop told me to be closer to 25-35k for fluid changes. Seems early but he said it would have made a difference.

I have heard good stuff about the 7.3 's. Let me know if you wanna trade it in.

Funny when a mechanic can do that.

08 Silverado 5.3, never an issue in the 8 years/56000 miles I owned it. 16 Ram 2500 Cummins, never an issue in the 6 years/50000 miles. Both bought new.

09 Tacoma 4.0, 150000 miles, runs like a top so far, only owned it about a year.

Ya I have an 08 Silverado with 200k miles. Still runs like a top

I’m on my 8th Ram diesel beginning with a 1991. 3 used 5 new. Over 100k on all except my current 2018. Never an issue with any of them beyond normal maintenance.

‘09 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3

Bought it with 47k miles. Has 163k now. Nary an issue with anything. Knock on wood

21 Tacoma manual V6. 35k trouble free miles. I read about the turd of an engine before I bought it. All true. The engine can barely accelerate to traffic speed on the interstate. I can't pass 18 wheelers going 75 when there is a headwind. Really. Not why I bought the truck though so it does what I need.

1st gen Tacomas are brilliantly reliable and capable, but the LBJs are a major issue. They need the Uniball conversions or SAS to be trusted very far from home. 2nd gens fixed the issue.

I have the F350, automatic. 230K. The only complaint is the steering, specifically the bearings suck. Otherwise, great truck, but it is huge.

I currently have a ‘14 f150 5.0 with 140k miles on it. Zero issues other than I’m looking to get a bigger camper and will need a bigger truck to go with it I suppose. The f150 pulls her horse trailer etc. I plan to keep the half ton. My wife had a 21” maverick with the hybrid motor. It gets about 40mpg and is surprisingly useable and comfy.
