I got into it after hunting season a couple years ago, I started off with cheap blades, scales off EBay. I didn’t want to spend a ton on learning materials. I had clamps, dremel, belt sander, so I altered the blades and handles as I preferred. Then I built a kydex press, got a rivet press, made the sheaths. It’s really fun but time consuming. I’d like to make my own blades, but in honesty that’s more than I want to get into it, I really enjoy shaping the handles and installing.

Any guys on here make knives? This thread has my gears turning

Nothing too fancy, but a little skinner I made a few years ago. Needs a little touch up polishing. I Cut it on the CNC mill, then surface ground it flat after heat treat with a course wheel to give it a little unique striated look to the blade.

I had this one made by a guy who runs a small shop out of his house. It’s made of d2 to steel and holds an edge really well, it’s a tank, it’s not 1/8” it’s the thicker one. The handles are made of ctek and I chose orange so I wouldn’t lose it. I asked him to round the bit of the handle off so it would be more comfortable for marathon skinning sessions.

I got this specifically for moose hunting, I still like my havalon but I wanted to have a big old hunting knife that doubled as a camp knife. I think I ended up paying 250-300 dollars, I don’t remember, it’s been ~ about 5 years now but this thing holds an edge and does great butchering my moose and caribou.

I wouldn’t take it backpacking but when I go hunting with my boat it goes for sure.

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules here.
Alot of good information on knives and makers on Bladeforums
They have a Makers sellers forum.

Another knife maker on my wish list is Backwoods Custom Knives

I have a backwoods and my dad has a couple. Got them all some years back when they were a little more affordable but they are great knives. I’ll try to get some pictures up eventually.

Dug through dads literal bag of knives (just the handmade bag, there’s another bag of factory knives lol) and found 2 Backwoods knives in there. The one I have at home is a larger damascus blade.

What kind of shitshow did you guys have to go through to get one of these knives? Sold out and from the remarks on forums his knives sell out in 30 seconds and not taking orders until next summer lol
Just have be lucky with your timing and be ready to purchase instantly should you see one available.

yes, they usually sell out in seconds...maybe minutes if it’s a big drop on his website.

My TK Steingass. I also spent some time on Blade Forums, always missed out on the blades I wanted so I contacted TK on his website.
