Does anyone have any patterns or plans for a 4 person tipi or 2 person tarp? My wife has a sewing machine and I need a project.

Also what type of material would you use to build one of these?

I have been debating this as well. Don't have a pattern but when I get started I will probably use paper or tarp or other cheap material to do a mock up first. The biggest limiting factor will be the width of the material you choose to use which I believe is usually 54"-60". That would determine the maximum width of a panel. Don't forget to allow for seam allowances and all that good stuff. Also, some Walmarts carry fabric and you can get some cheap material for $1.50/yd to do a mock up as well.

Also, much of the info I have gathered has come from backpackinglight.com

For materials, I would suggest looking around for silnylon 2nds. Here are a couple places to check:

I've been to the majority of those sites. I think someone just needs to bite the bullet and come up with a pattern for a tipi that we can distribute to the rokslide community so they can DIY.

someone can double check my math but this should work for an 8 sided tipi (hopefully I attached that correctly). cut the pieces with "l" for the bottom and "s" for the side. pick whatever diameter and height you want. you'll need to add any extra you'll need for seams

I got inspired to make one. Ordered silnylon from http://ripstopbytheroll.com/ and all the other stuff from DIYgearsupply.com

Have $200 in materials and will be building an 8 sided tipi, 8.5' height and the panels will be around 4.5' wide each at the bottom. Pretty good size when done.

Should be fun. I'll post progress pics as I go along.
