6.5 prc recoil?

Is there any significant difference in recoil between a 6.5prc and 30-06? Rifle would be a Tikka Veil Wideland.

I have a Tikka 30-06 and now have a Tikka 6.5 PRC. Without involving a brake, the recoil of the 6.5 PRC is most definitely less than a 30-06, but is still a bit snappier than I had anticipated. Not bad, but I do prefer shooting it with the factory brake, which makes it much easier to spot shots.

Ok thanks for the replies.

The reason I asked this is over the past 1.5 years I have had two back operations and about a dozen injections. It’s turned me a bit recoil sensitive I guess you could say. I sold my Bergara 300wm and bought a Tikka Wideland 30-06. Figured a braked 06 would be mild enough. Love the gun and shoot it pretty well but all the 223 and 6.5 threads about there success on game has me thinking maybe I could step down again in recoil. Was thinking a 6.5prc in the same gun or go with a superlite in 7-08 so I’d be shooting the same cartridge as my son and simplify things.

Yea I’ve been reloading for many years. I am well stocked on .308 bullets and ‘06 brass but I have a Savage 30-06 I can use those components on.

I say go for it. A braked 6.5 PRC should get your recoil down a good bit, and the 6.5 PRC is plenty capable of killing darn near everything if you shoot reasonably well. I have a bad shooting shoulder, which is why I stepped down to 6.5 PRC. I'll take it for a spin on elk next week.

How far you want to shoot? 143s out of my lowly Creedmoor hit 1800fps at 750 yards. I will say the 7-08 sounds fun, but entirely unnecessary for me to add to my stable.

If you're not willing to fully go down the 223 rabbit hole, which I myself am not. Depends on what you're shooting at and the distance, but the lowly 6.5 and 6cm will both kill deer at any ethical hunting distance and not have the recoil of the 6.5prc.

This https://shooterscalculator.com/recoil-calculator.php#google_vignette will give you a really good idea of recoil, just calculate what you want and then look at how that compares energy wise to what you know from experience. A 143gr 6.5prc is going to have about 20% less recoil than a 180gr 30-06 while the 6.5cm has 45% less recoil and the 6cm has 60% less recoil.

The Superlight in 708 with heavier bullets is surprisingly unpleasant to shoot and I moved mine on
What are you shooting at?
Consider an 8 twist tikka 243 if you really want distance with low recoil

This rifle would be for everything from antelope to elk. And general backyard plinking. My son and I really enjoy spending the afternoon in our backyard range. 600 yard max on shots.

I went from a 300 win to a 6.5 saum and love it for big game western hunting. I think a 6.5 prc with a 130 mono would be a good compromise of performance and recoil. My 12 year old can shoot the saum from the bench and he’s around 100 lbs, that’s with a 140.

I have a 6.5 PRC put together on a Tikka in a KRG bravo equipped with a can and currently shoot 130 TMKs. It’s as much recoil as I want to deal with and genuinely would like less recoil or more performance ie equal terminal performance at greater distance for the same recoil.

An 88 ELDM out of a 22CM, a 108 ELDM out of a 6CM or a 143 ELDX or 147ELDM out of a 6.5CM are all capable, if not more capable of terminal performance at the maximum distance you’re expecting and will have less recoil.

I'd echo what PNWGator said. I have a Tikka rebarreled to 6.5-284 in an Alterra Arms stock with a suppressor shooting 156gr Bergers. I wish I'd done a 6mm Creedmoor. The recoil isn't bad with the current setup, but it does make it difficult to spot shots when shooting from less than ideal field positions.

I have a breaked 6.5prc shooting 156s, and it recoils less then an unbreaked 6.5cm shooting 143s. The prc is an awesome cartridge and really easy to reload for.

Well, this idea might be dead in the water. I called Scheels to see about a trade. My Wideland in 30-06 for a new one in 6.5prc. They offered half of the retail price for my 06. This trade isn't worth it if I have to put in another $700 cash to make it work.
