Glass advancements

This is kind of a random question but has glass reached its pinnacle? What advancements have been made over the past 50 years to glass? The best glass 50 yrs ago, would it still be considered the best glass today? I know there have been advancements in coatings etc, but I'm asking about the optic quality of the glass specifically .
