Marc Smith, Hoyt Archer Proshooter

Every year at the Expo there are some great seminars on hunting.  I saw Marc Smith was doing a seminar on finding good places ot hunt mule deer far from home.   This is a great subject for anyone hunting beyond their old stomping grounds and a skill few hunters understand well enough to regularly find good places to hunt beyond state lines. It’s harder than most of us think.  Marc presented his methods for using social media when looking for a new place to hunt.

It was a good seminar.  Marc, in a not-too-serious-humorous style, presented his methods for researching mule deer desintations. He lives in Texas but has successfully hunted mule deer in the West, often thousands of miles from his home and without a research service.  He loves the DIY method of researching areas and just uses Facebook, Instagram, and other social media to connect with hunters.

He starts with a goal in mind and then does enough research that he has a backup plan if things don’t workout (as they so often don’t when chasing big bucks)

He talked about exploring new areas.  Marc is cool in that he’s happy with any good buck taken on a hard-earned hunt and doesn’t have to have a giant buck to be happy. He did however talk about researching areas for the bigger bucks.

By all the questions asked at the end, I think he really connected with the audience which seemed to have a lot of backcountry DIY hunters there.

Mark presents again tomorrow Saturday, February 21 at 4:15 pm Room 150 G.  If you’re here, I’d recommend you go. If you can’t, you can find Mark on Facebook at Marc Smith Muleyslayer

Robby Denning
Robby Denning started hunting mule deer in the late 1970’s, only missing one season in 35 years. At 25, he gave up the pursuit of all other big-game to focus on taking the best bucks possible. He began hunting the West on a DIY budget hunting an average of 30 days a year for mule deer. Robby loves the hunt as much as the kill and the entire process from research to scouting to hunting. He’s killed four bucks over 200 inches in the last 15 seasons, mostly on easily-obtained tags. He owns a public-land scouting service and runs a private-land outfitting business helping other hunters in their pursuit of deer and elk. Robby has scouted and hunted literally thousands of square miles of mule deer country and brings a wealth of knowledge about these experiences with him. To him, the weapon of choice is just a means-to-an-end and will hunt with bow, rifle, or muzzleloader – whatever it takes to create an opportunity to take a great mule deer. He is also the author of "Hunting Big Mule Deer" available on Amazon. Robby believes all of creation is from God for man to manage, respect, and through which to know its Creator
