Arrived to the first place I’m hunting late last night and just set up a cot in the back of the truck. After thunder and lightning all night (had to get in the cab once), it dawned to breezy conditions and about 60 degrees.

I was on the trail by 5:40.   Found lots of bucks and one shooter. Hot, dry, and dusty, but a pretty good day as the the video shows.  The video editor dropped a clip, but right after I see those first bucks and say I’m not going after them, no less than 10 more appeared across the draw with at least two shooters.  You’ll see I didn’t waste any time heading for an ambush.

And by the way, that is my very old 20x Leupold spotter in the video.  It’s a long ol’ hike in this place and it’s my lightest spotter and gets the job done for closer range work.  Sure missed the Swarovski and the Vortex 15x once the bucks showed up, though.

Robby Denning
Robby Denning started hunting mule deer in the late 1970’s, only missing one season in 35 years. At 25, he gave up the pursuit of all other big-game to focus on taking the best bucks possible. He began hunting the West on a DIY budget hunting an average of 30 days a year for mule deer. Robby loves the hunt as much as the kill and the entire process from research to scouting to hunting. He’s killed four bucks over 200 inches in the last 15 seasons, mostly on easily-obtained tags. He owns a public-land scouting service and runs a private-land outfitting business helping other hunters in their pursuit of deer and elk. Robby has scouted and hunted literally thousands of square miles of mule deer country and brings a wealth of knowledge about these experiences with him. To him, the weapon of choice is just a means-to-an-end and will hunt with bow, rifle, or muzzleloader – whatever it takes to create an opportunity to take a great mule deer. He is also the author of "Hunting Big Mule Deer" available on Amazon. Robby believes all of creation is from God for man to manage, respect, and through which to know its Creator

  1. Nice my nephew and I got into a bachelor group of shooter 4 points in living room size patch of pines….. this morning if only the wind did not act like water.. 🙂 It was a great stalk, they moved out to 50 yds and were moving back into beds when another swirl… hopefully can turn them up again soon. I like your updates props to you videoing and stalking, hart to multi task.

  2. Thanks Robby! The amount of time you are spending just to keep us entertained and trained is appreciated greatly! I just finished your book for the second time. It has made the hours of eliptical more like meditation. Just getting in my mindset for ten days of solo mule deer starting the 15th. I will be bringing it with me to keep in the zone. I will be following this blog daily and hope to see a grip and grin picture before I head out. I may try and do a live hunt on mine also.

    Thanks again

  3. Thanks for chiming in guys. Jason, I’ve got great cell service so not to hard to update once per day. Would love to see your hunt if possible. Either way, good luck, be careful, and enjoy your solo hunt.

  4. That was a great video! Having that many bucks around must be exciting. I Hope you can close the distance on that big one!
