5:00 am, been raining hard for two days and still coming down.  Today is practically the last day I can hunt him for 2014, so here I go.  At least the stalking condition are the best they’ve been.  Shooting light is at 6:50, so I should be in there just right.

9:25 AM I see a lot of deer but no Bucks  raining cats and dogs, still hunting and glassing

11:05. I glassed all the country he was using earlier in September but never spotted him or any other bucks. This is why I plan all my hunt days as close to velvet as possible. Once they rub, especially older experienced bucks, they get hard to find. Oh well Praise The Lord anyway. I can’t hunt him during the rifle season due to commitments in my outfitting business so this was it boys. We’ll see what next year brings. This was the third season I’d seen him so there is a chance he could be here next year. I’d guess he’s five or six now so next year he could be his best yet. Thanks everyone for your interest and dedication following it to the end. Unfortunately most really big deer get away but that is the game I play. Thank you.

Robby Denning
Robby Denning started hunting mule deer in the late 1970’s, only missing one season in 35 years. At 25, he gave up the pursuit of all other big-game to focus on taking the best bucks possible. He began hunting the West on a DIY budget hunting an average of 30 days a year for mule deer. Robby loves the hunt as much as the kill and the entire process from research to scouting to hunting. He’s killed four bucks over 200 inches in the last 15 seasons, mostly on easily-obtained tags. He owns a public-land scouting service and runs a private-land outfitting business helping other hunters in their pursuit of deer and elk. Robby has scouted and hunted literally thousands of square miles of mule deer country and brings a wealth of knowledge about these experiences with him. To him, the weapon of choice is just a means-to-an-end and will hunt with bow, rifle, or muzzleloader – whatever it takes to create an opportunity to take a great mule deer. He is also the author of "Hunting Big Mule Deer" available on Amazon. Robby believes all of creation is from God for man to manage, respect, and through which to know its Creator

  1. Well, I’m slightly bummed, but also really excited to see next year’s live hunt! Thanks for taking us with you Robby.

  2. Thanks for the genuine approach to sharing the hunt. It’s refreshing to hear the whole story, including the part where the big old buck is so elusive. I can relate to them disappearing like that, and figuring out where they go is what keeps us out there!

  3. You will get him next year! Thanks for posting your hunts! I’m new to Rokslide and there is a lot of good info to catch up on!
