With hunting season winding down, the Rok Blog is heating up with some great gear giveaways.  Our “Who Is?” series introduces you to the hunters and companies that I think can improve your success rate.

I wanted to introduce an innovative company with an ingenious product: Elk Mountain Gear and their SLIP system.

Meet Jeff Ervin, the owner of Elk Mountain Gear and the creator of one of the most photo-realistic AND versatile decoys on the market: the Elk Mountain SLIP system.  Hang on, though!  The SLIP is way more than a decoy.  Read on and find out about his innovative product and how you can win your very own.

The term SLIP means you can “slip” any of Elk Mountain’s covers- which include elk, deer, pronghorn, waterfowl, and turkey decoys AND no less than eight camo patterns– on the system for whatever hunt you’re on.  The term “system” goes beyond just the SLIP covers (this is where it gets very interesting).  The system can be a trekking pole, a shooting stick, function as a camera adapter, an umbrella, treestand shelter, and portable blind.  All this and the SLIP still tips the scale at only 1.9 pounds.  Pretty light considering it takes the place of so much gear.

Like many of the best outdoor products featured on the Rok Blog, the SLIP system was born out of necessity.  Jeff and a friend are hard-core backcountry archery elk hunters.  Their favorite elk country starts at 11,000′ in Colorado requiring trekking poles to reach.  The duo had also been successul using elk decoys.  One day, his friend said “why don’t you invent a decoy that is a blind and a walking stick?”

That was an “Ah ha!” moment and Jeff quickly came up with a design.  Next, he asked a friend’s grandpa, a retired machinist, to help him build the first prototype. Then came the idea of switchable, stretchable covers.  The system spent one year in research & development and now, the company’s fifth year, the SLIP has more than caught on.  Jeff lays claim to the most photo-realistic decoys in the industry.  Many hunters agree the best way to kill a rutting herd bull is with a decoy and the SLIP fits the bill perfectly.

For more information, check out Elk Mountain’s video on the SLIP system here.  For sure, visit the website at http://elkmtngear.com/ or check out Jeff’s most FAQ. If you like Blogs, Jeff can make good on that, too: Elk Mountain Blog

So, you feeling lucky?  Then take advantage of Jeff’s generosity and get in the game to win an Elk Mountain SLIP system valued at $115 plus shipping.

It’s easy.  First, you have to be a subscriber to the Rok Blog (see top of blog “subscribe to blog” just under the “Fitness/Other links).  If you’re sure you’re already a subscriber, then move on to step two.  Just visit and “Like” Elk Mountain Gear’s Facebook page.   Then just sit back and relax.  On December 15th, Jeff and I will draw for one winner.  I’ll announce the winner right here on the Rok Blog.

Remember, you must be both a Rok Blog subscriber AND “Like”  Elk Mountain Gear’s Facebook page.  It’s that easy.  These giveaways usually have great odds, so don’t delay.  The only catch?  We want to hear about your experience with the SLIP system.  You waterfowlers and late season archers could start using the system right away.  Get entered!

Robby Denning
Robby Denning started hunting mule deer in the late 1970’s, only missing one season in 35 years. At 25, he gave up the pursuit of all other big-game to focus on taking the best bucks possible. He began hunting the West on a DIY budget hunting an average of 30 days a year for mule deer. Robby loves the hunt as much as the kill and the entire process from research to scouting to hunting. He’s killed four bucks over 200 inches in the last 15 seasons, mostly on easily-obtained tags. He owns a public-land scouting service and runs a private-land outfitting business helping other hunters in their pursuit of deer and elk. Robby has scouted and hunted literally thousands of square miles of mule deer country and brings a wealth of knowledge about these experiences with him. To him, the weapon of choice is just a means-to-an-end and will hunt with bow, rifle, or muzzleloader – whatever it takes to create an opportunity to take a great mule deer. He is also the author of "Hunting Big Mule Deer" available on Amazon. Robby believes all of creation is from God for man to manage, respect, and through which to know its Creator

  1. As a user of Jeff’s Elk Mountain Slip System I call tell you it one of my Favorite pieces of gear and I never leave home to go hunting without it now. Its so versatile and can do so much. When Backpack hunting having gear with you that fills many rolls is critical to reducing weight and also being able to be multifunctional. I am a true believer in The Slip System and it will be in my Kit for the next 20 years of my hunting.

  2. Though I never had a chance to use this as a decoy this past season, it worked perfect as a shelter and hiking staff. Plus Jeff’s customer service is awesome. I’m looking forward to getting some more use out of this system next season.
